Saints march into grand final

The Saints didn’t have it all their own way, struggling to convert their opportunities in the opening term. Kicking into the wind the got 0.5, while Deni made the most of their opportunities landing 2.1 to take a lead into the first break.

From there the Saints settled and began to find their usual form.

A much improved second quarter saw Berrigan pile on 2.6 while keeping Deni scoreless, turning the margin around and taking a 10 point lead into half-time.

The third quarter continued in much the same fashion. The Saints’ pressure around the contest lifted, the boys started finding more avenues forward plus another two goals and extended the lead to 19 points at the final change.

With a grand final berth firmly in their sights, there was still plenty of work to do in the final term. Deni continued to pressure each passage, with both sides booting four goals in the final term.

Berrigan, with more opportunities in front of goal, recorded a well deserved victory.

Final score: Berrigan 8.16 (64) def Deni Rovers 7.3 (45).

It was a terrific team effort, with Joel Fitzell, Lachlan Whelan, Jack Magill, Nick Arnold, Tom Baxter and Jordan Swann all named among Berrigan’s best, though it was a whole team contribution.

Up forward, Lachlan Whelan led the way with three goals, while Jordan Swann chipped in with two, dishing one off to Zavier Binns. Logan Peasley and Lachlan Packer also contributed to the score.

The Saints will take on Barooga in a grand final showdown at Mathoura on Saturday.
