Mansfield star stalwart Brett Mahoney will take the reins of the Eagles’ senior Goulburn Valley League football side for at least the next two seasons.
Mahoney was announced as coach for 2027 and 2028 on Wednesday, with the familiar Mansfield surname taking over outgoing senior helmsman Mitch Wareham’s duties.
A 2009 premiership Eagle, Mahoney accumulated over 200 senior appearances across the journey, while his formative football years were also at the club as a junior.
Mahoney played four games in 2026, rounds one to three, before missing the bulk of the campaign through injury to return in round 18 against Shepparton United.
In the Eagles’ 2025 preliminary final bound season, the club legend featured 11 times and was named in the best four times.
“A new chapter for one of our greats, Brett Mahoney will take the reins as Senior Men’s Coach for the next two seasons,” Mansfield FNC said in a club statement on social media.
“From Mansfield junior to premiership player, 200-game Eagle and one of the club’s most respected figures, Brett knows what it means to wear the navy and gold.
“We’re incredibly excited to have him lead our next generation of talent.”
Additionally, the Eagles also announced the re-signing of Tegan Hopkins as A-grade netball coach.
Hopkins led Mansfield to a drought-breaking A-grade finals appearance, rallying from a four-win 2025 season and 2-4 start to the year to finish fifth with a 10-8 record.
The finals charge comes just three years after the Eagles recorded back-to-back winless years in the GVL’s A-grade.
