The Goulburn Valley League has told clubs that this year’s Morrison Medal and Wellman Medal count - the best and fairest night for senior football and A-grade netball - will be held at Tatura Football Netball Club’s Ballantyne Centre.
It makes the move from previous events being held at the GV Hotel, where Mansfield’s Callum Brown and Shepparton’s Kim Borger claimed the prestigious best and fairest prizes last year.
The Morrison and Wellman medal vote counts, as well as other senior and reserves football and netball awards, will be at Ballantyne Centre on Monday, September 14, ahead of the GVL’s grand final day on Sunday, September 20.
However, as the league looks to revamp its processes ahead of the transition into a self-governed organisation, junior football and netball awards will now be held on a separate date.
Set to be held at The Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) in Kialla on Saturday, October 3, the ceremony for under-18s football and under-15s and under-17 netball will aim to be a grazing table-style event, with Australian futurist, author and entrepreneur Steve Sammartino to be a keynote speaker.
GVL board chair Peter Foott stated the separate junior presentations is something the league hopes to evolve into a marquee occasion for young athletes, where parents and relatives of children can attend and enjoy, and encourage the juniors to present speeches to an audience as they become the staple focus of the presentation day.
As for the transition to self-governance, the GVL is nearing the interview process for the general manager position.
Interviews are to be conducted around grand final week, with aims to shortlist the best potential candidates following.
“We’ve got about 20 interviews to go through,” Foott said.
“In the mean time, we’re looking forward to big crowds again at this weekend’s finals after a terrific turnout last week.”
Shepparton face Mooroopna at King’s Park, Seymour, in Saturday’s win or go home semi-final at 2:00pm, before Echuca face Kyabram at Kyabram Recreation Reserve in a double-chance semi-final on Sunday at 2:00pm - the winner punching its ticket to the big dance.
