Most questions are directed to the government during question time, with independents normally left out of the loop.
However, independent Member for Mildura Ali Cupper used her question to ask Ms Sheed about her motion to allow independents to bring bills to the floor — a motion she is unable to table because of the rules her bill would overturn.
Ms Sheed has long been advocating for independents to have more rights to talk in Parliament, with Victoria’s laws out of step with the rest of the nation’s.
She said the results of last month’s Federal Election showed “independents are on the march”.
“Just look at the outcomes of the Federal Election – people are realising that independents are working with and for the community and can make serious changes in Parliament,” Ms Sheed said.
“I will not be silent about the reintroduction of non-government business in the Victorian Parliament.
“The Victorian Labor Party should pay attention to this request for basic democracy because they may see more independents on the cross-bench following the November election, who will unite to have their voices heard.”
She said independents needed the chance to bring on motions and private members’ bills "in detail, rather than be afforded such limited opportunity to have our say“.
“I hope the Victorian Government will hear our calls and introduce non-government business before the 59th Parliament term ends,” she said.
