That goal drew one step closer at the weekend, as the Border Raiders confidently surged by lower-table Castlemaine Goldfields Gold 3-0.
The side headed to Chewton Soldiers Memorial Park outside of Castlemaine for the clash, but the long road didn’t seem to faze the Border Raiders as they were quickly into their attacking groove.
Clayton Scott got on the end of the first successful attacking move within 11 minutes getting the locals off to a dream start, before Patrick Barry doubled the advantage 10 minutes later.
In full control of proceedings the Border Raiders went into the sheds with spirits high and the score 2-0.
The second 45 minutes brought more of the same and Echuca Moama was rewarded with its third goal in the 76th minute, Samuel Wanesiofa sealing the game and another three points for the leader.
With four fixtures left the Border Raiders (10-1-1: 31 points) are five points clear at the top.
Swan Hill (26) sits in second, while Colts are in a similar position on 23, but with one extra game still to play.
Should either Swan Hill or Colts remain perfect the Border Raiders need another nine points to guarantee the premiership and the opportunity of promotion to League 1.
Colts and Swan Hill face each other at the weekend, so one or both clubs are guaranteed to drop points.
The Border Raiders play fifth-ranked Castlemaine Goldfields Green at Jack Eddy Oval in Moama on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Border Raiders women’s side, which was on a bye at the weekend, is headed into a game that may decide its chances of finishing top, facing leader Swan Hill away on Sunday.
The Border Raiders trail their opponents by five points as things stand, but with a game in hand.
