Tom sears Suns

Tom Hawkins had his best performance for the 2020 AFL season as he helped steer Geelong to victory on Saturday. The Finley prodigy had a game to remember, coming up with a season high goals (three), disposals (17), goal assists (four) and marks (eight). The effort saw the Cats overcome the Gold Coast Suns at GMHBA Stadium, with a final score of 13.11 (89) to 8.4 (52).Hawkins’ goal tally for the game was only equalled by the Suns’ full forward Ben King, and Hawkins’ mark total was also a game-high.The night also saw Geelong greats Gary Ablett and Joel Selwood celebrate their 350 and 300 AFL game milestones respectively. After conceding the opening goal of the game, Geelong were quick to respond with four straight goals in the first term.Hawkins was on fire early kicking back-to-back goals as his side closed out the first quarter 20 points in front.A moment of brilliance from the veteran full forward in a ruck contest against Sam Day that led to a left foot goal was seamlessly overshadowed by Gold Coast’s big second term.A charge led by King, who slotted all three of his goals in the second, brought his away side to within four points at the half. After dropping the lead early in the third, the Cats steered their way back to the winning column after a Luke Dahlhaus goal.Unfortunately for the Suns, an Alex Sexton goal 23 minutes into the third term was the last time the visitors hit the scoreboard. The Cats poured on 22 straight points in the final term to record the win.Hawkins and his Cats teammates are now in hub life in Sydney as they prepare for a blockbuster clash against second placed Brisbane at the SCG tomorrow night. All Victorian clubs have been forced into hubs due to the recent outbreak of the Coronavirus. After their clash with the Lions, Geelong will head to Perth for at least four weeks.
