The nationwide initiative was led at the school by Year 10 student Tamika Johnstone, who has a personal connection to the cause.
Tamika discussed the importance of the day and said she lost one of her best friends, Gemma, at age five to a genetic disorder.
So when Tamika saw Jeans for Genes Day was approaching this year, she grabbed the opportunity to take part.
Gold coin donations were collected for jeans worn on the day, raising money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute.
As well as assisting with the day, Tamika has been taking on the Jeans for Genes 100 Skips a Day in August challenge.
The challenge involves doing 100 jump rope skips every day this month to help raise funds and awareness for life-saving research.
Many students and teachers across the school community wore jeans or supported the cause, raising more than $350 on the day.
With every dollar matched by Jeans for Genes Australia, and with her own fundraising efforts added, Tamika’s tally stands at $1300 so far.
