The commitment aims to deliver much-improved facilities for local CFA volunteers and better support the work they do protecting the community.
The Yarrawonga CFA station is not fit for purpose, and CFA inspectors have said it is not suitable for refurbishment.
The Victorian Government announced $148.6 million in April 2026, including funding for CFA fleet, stations and critical and much needed equipment, but once again Yarrawonga was left off the list.
After the announcement, Yarrawonga CFA Captain Lawrence Phillips told the Yarrawonga Chronicle that he was surprised they had been overlooked for funding, particularly given the town’s rapid growth and the brigade’s ongoing reliance on outdated equipment and facilities.
Yarrawonga is one of the fastest growing towns in regional Victoria, but Capt. Phillips said volunteers were using outdated vehicles as the station was too small for new vehicles to fit into.
“The town is not able to be serviced by reliable machinery,” he said.
“There are no showers so we’re taking contaminated clothing home into our homes and families - that’s a major thing, a brigade like ours should have showers.”
A new fire station in Yarrawonga has been CFA District 22’s top priority for many years and the second highest station replacement priority for the North East Fire District, which extends from Chirmside Park to Seymour, Shepparton, Wangaratta and Wodonga.
Mr McCurdy said Yarrawonga was a growing community where emergency services needed facilities that were fit for purpose and ready to meet the needs of the future.
“This new station will give Yarrawonga CFA volunteers a modern facility to support their work and help keep the community safe for years to come,” he said.
