Ovens Valley MP, Tim McCurdy made the announcement in Yarrawonga yesterday and said the funding would support Yarrawonga Mulwala Community and Learning Centre’s planned move to the former Yarrawonga Primary School site.
“Yarrawonga Neighbourhood House does so much for our community, bringing people together, supporting local residents and providing opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds,” Mr McCurdy said.
“This funding will help transform the site into a welcoming, modern and fit-for-purpose space where the organisation can continue its important work for years to come.”
YMCLC executive officer, Julie-Anne Clarke said the funds represented more than half of the $5.9 million needed to refurbish the old school site.
Moira Shire Council is in negotiations with the State Government to secure the site for future community use and local philanthropic organisation, Alexandra Park Club, has committed one million dollars to help repurpose the site.
The former Yarrawonga Primary School has been unused since 2018.
The historic community asset contains heritage buildings, a former courthouse, and World War I memorial trees.
YMCLC’s proposed move would provide an opportunity to create a central hub for community activities, learning, cultural engagement and wellbeing services.
“Yarrawonga is growing, and we need community facilities that can grow alongside it,” Mr McCurdy said.
He said the organisation would also benefit from a separate $10 million statewide commitment to support Neighbourhood Houses across Victoria under an elected Liberals and Nationals government.
