A ‘Big Freeze’ component was again added to the event this year, which co-organiser Carmel Butcher was in part to commemorate their friend Ian Sneddon.
‘‘When my golfing partner Ian Sneddon, from Jerilderie, was diagnosed with MND, I got together with Steve Dalgleish and we decided to approach the Jerilderie Sports Club board,’’ she said.
‘‘We asked if we could hold a golf day with a Big Freeze to raise money for MND Victoria.
‘‘The board of directors were very happy and asked if we could combine with the Jerilderie Hospital Auxiliary, so we could help them with their fundraising as well.
‘‘So the Jerilderie Hospital Auxiliary & Motor Neurone Research Fundraising begun in 2018.’’
The participants started Sunday on the golf course, with a 10am shotgun start that morning.
A smaller number stayed on for the afternoon of bowls.
Six of those taking part in the day participated in the Big Freeze, taking to the chilly water for the cause — Jordan Anthony, Tania Roe, Stuart Smith, David Barlow, Carmen Lawton and Ben Nash.
‘‘This year the Big Freeze went so well,’’ Mrs Butcher said.
‘‘People really got into it and got all dressed up, so it was funny too.
‘‘We also had the Victorian representative for MND which made it a special event. Julie Bryan, who is Ian’s daughter and lives on the Gold Coast, is one of 10 MND Ambassadors for Victoria.’’
Morning and afternoon tea was provided by the Hospital Auxiliary and its helpers, the Jerilderie Lions Club and Tidy Towns members were kept busy cooking the barbecue.
The goal for the auxiliary this year is to raise enough money to refurbish the hospital verandah. At the time of going to print yesterday, the amount raised from the charity day was not confirmed.
