The iconic pub and motel has been going through a makeover since it was purchased by the Deniliquin couple.
They want to recreate a vintage 1920s look after buying the hotel ‘‘on a an absolute whim’’, according to Ms Pitt.
‘‘I fell in love with the Tatts and convinced my husband Rex to purchase it,’’ she said.
‘‘It was a complete mix of me having my retro fix and Rex having his historical red brick hotel.
‘‘It has been hectic during the past eight months and we’re really fortunate to have a great family and staff behind our concept.
‘‘We’re putting something out there similar to what you would see in those central Victoria quirky little historical towns. Luckily Tocumwal has everything you want with a great community.’’
The Tatts’ creative director Carly Doyle said Ms Pitt always starts out big and it doesn’t really get any smaller.
‘‘We really want to create something for everybody and I think that was captured in the video interview that Kate and Rex displayed,’’ she said.
‘‘We don’t want it to be about the hotel or us, we really want it to be about everyone else.
‘‘We’re proud to create a space everyone has hand prints over and look forward to growing that.’’
Ms Pitt said it was a privilege to win the What’s New in the Berrigan Shire category.
‘‘We’re incredibly proud, we’ve put a lot into our business in Tocumwal.
‘‘It feels great to be among such worthy nominations. One thing that has come out of the night is awareness of the incredible businesses that are within the Berrigan Shire.
‘‘All of us sitting around the table, it’s there in your face. We’ve seen the complexity the businesses have and the diversity of what’s here in the shire; these awards make you aware of that.’’
Other finalists were: Stroke Work in Motion (Barooga), Woodstock Flour (Berrigan) Busliner Buses (Tocumwal) and Travelling Podiatrist (Tocumwal).
