Tocumwal Fire + Rescue NSW’s annual open day gives children and adults alike a chance to inspect the equipment used by firefighters, and learn some key safety advice.
Brigade Captain Ian Desailly said fire safety is paramount year round, but said the open day is specifically timed ahead of a busy period for home fires — winter.
‘‘We took about 120 people through the station, and we discussed important matters like smoke detectors, cleaning the barbecue to prevent a fire, making sure your gas heaters are serviced regularly and the risks of drying clothes too close to a heater,’’ Capt Desailly said.
‘‘The kids were allowed to jump in the fire trucks, and they were each given a show bag containing that iconic red, plastic firefghter’s helmet.
‘‘It was a good day all round.’’
Seven Tocumwal firefighters — half of the brigade — were on hand for the open day to share their knowledge and provide advice.
‘‘We like to hold these open days once a year, so we can get the fire safety message out there.
‘‘We were not able to hold one last year because of COVID-19, so it was good to be able to host it this year.’’
