The two teams were neck-and-neck through the whole game.
The Saints’ biggest asset was their conversion rate in front of the big sticks with numerous goals from way outside 50m.
It seemed Berrigan could do no wrong when it came to scoreboard impact.
With only five minutes to go in the game, Rennie led by nine points, and then the match became a stalemate as neither side could put a score on the board.
That is until the Saints broke the drought with only two minutes left, cutting the lead to three points.
After numerous stoppages, the ball was going nowhere.
Enter Berrigan’s Toby Dalgliesh. With only about 30 seconds remaining, he was awarded a free kick and a shot on goal at around 35m out on a harsh 50-degree angle.
Berrigan fans were anxious for the shot, and Rennie Fans made a racket to try to deter Toby’s kick.
However, nothing could stop Toby as he slotted the goal, with his teammates swarming him from all positions on the ground.
Toby wasn’t just a ‘one kick’ wonder though. He had been electric all game through the midfield.
Big ruckman Adam Way made a statement about his return from injury as he dominated ruck taps and found himself forward, nailing three goals of his own.
Jordan Bird once again filled his goal kicking appetite with another impressive four-goal outing, proving to be an elite goal kicker and being able to play spare down back.
The Bartlett brothers, Jacob and Rory, were also in fine form using their run and superb positioning to impact the game at any moment.
Berrigan’s whole backline proved to be stingy. They were under siege but with strong headlining performances from Zeke Carruthers, Steve Patten and Zav Mcphee, the lads held up like concrete.
The seniors will look to take this momentum into next week when they face Mathoura in Berrigan.
Final score: Berrigan 14.6 (90) def Rennie 12.15 (87).
Reserves:
Sadly undermanned and undersized, the Berrigan boys couldn’t get the job done.
What can be said is that the determination and dedication that the core group of the reserves players have is yet to be questioned.
Henry Zorzer and Ben Ackerly epitomised this with brilliant attack on the ball.
With hard tackles and relentless pressure, the two young guns were direct reflections of what this team could be at their best.
Ethan Mills has been somewhat of a revelation to the Berrigan forward line with the stocky forward doing his best work when operating in next to no space.
Ethan’s lightning-quick ‘ball to boot’ speed is a massive asset that saw him get three massive goals this week.
Alex Park used his athleticism to his advantage as he took countless high-flying marks and ruck taps. Whether down back, in the midfield or in the ruck, he used his impressive vertical leap to his and his teammates’ advantage.
Noel Baxter remains extremely dependable and consistent in the guts, fearlessly laying tackles or giving out handballs.
Final score: Berrigan 3.3 (21) def by Rennie 16.6 (102).
Fourths:
No report.
Final score: Berrigan 14.11 (95) def Rennie 1.2 (8).
