Mrs Ewer tendered her resignation at an extraordinary council meeting on Monday.
It comes 12 months before the end of her five year contract with the council was due to expire.
Mayor Julia Cornwell McKean said council will meet again next week to discuss a temporary replacement, and to continue the process of recruiting for a permanent CEO.
“We are acting swiftly to appoint an interim chief executive officer to ensure continuity and stability,” Cr Cornwell McKean said.
“Council will hold another extraordinary meeting on Monday, July 7 to discuss the appointment of an interim CEO.
“The recruitment process for a permanent replacement will also begin without delay.”
Mrs Ewer came to Berrigan Shire in May 2021 from Streaky Bay Council in South Australia.
She replaced Rowan Perkins in the position, following his retirement in April 2021 after a 27 year career with the local council.
Mrs Ewer was one of 18 candidates considered for the job, from across the country and the government, local government and private sectors. Seven were shortlisted to be interviewed.
Council is hopeful a similar level of interest will be shown again in this new recruitment process.
“We’ll be sure to keep the community informed throughout this transition,” Cr Cornwell McKean said.
