Southern Riverina Veterans

The Southern Riverina Veterans Golf Association April Competition Day was played on Monday at the Finley Golf Club.

Stableford was played with 90 golfers taking part.

Prior to presentations at the end of the day, Southern Riverina Veteran Golfers Association president Geoff Portbury presented Richard King from Yarrawonga with a life member certificate and medal in recognition of his long-time service to the SR Vets.

Tocumwal golfer Ron Huy, on 37 points, took the A-grade trophy with Colin Holdsworth also from Tocumwal on 36 points as runner-up.

Kevin Keating from Cobram/Barooga, after countback on 34 points, claimed B-grade, and Billy Smith from Finley was runner-up also on 34 points.

James Oakley from Tocumwal had 35 points to claim C-grade from Graeme Landy from Cobram who was runner-up after countback on 34 points.

A-grade NTP went to Lyle Herrick (Cobram), B-grade was Tony Forristal (Yarrawonga), C-grade went to Tom Wilton (Tocumwal) and All-grades was claimed by Kevin McCumstie (Finley).

Ball competition winners were players who had 27 points or better.

Riverina Left Hand Golfers

It was South Australia versus the Riverina at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club for the Walmsley Trophy held on April 1 and 2.

South Australia 56.34 def Riverina 54.29.

This was the third year for the Walmsley Trophy, with South Australia now winning twice.

A total of 47 players attended the weekend and competition was held for both left and right-handed golfers.

If you are interested in joining the Riverina Division, it is $20 for left-handed golfers and $10 for right-handed players per calendar year.

Jerilderie

The Ladies Monthly Medal & VWGA Championships were played, with the winner being Heather Cameron net 77 on countback from runner-up Julie Sleigh.

Julie also won the putting with 28 putts.

On Friday, in perfect weather, players travelled to Corowa to play in the Chomley Davidson Bowl.

Jerilderie finished well inside the top half of the teams event, which was a terrific result.

Congratulations to Suz Graham who was B-grade runner-up with a great score of 41 points and also won NTP in C-grade.

It was very sad to see nine of their 27 holes were still under repair after recent floods.

Sunday saw the first round of the Ladies Club Championships & VWGA Mabel Mackenzie Brooch, played under trying conditions due to the overnight rain.

Winner was the in-form golfer Suz Graham on 100/28/72, with runner-up Di Rutherford on 110/33/77.

This Sunday is the second round of the championships - 10am for a 10.30am start.

Sunday was also the Men’s Monthly Medal with the winner being Aaron Purcell on 82/10/72 and runner-up Rod Dowling with 89/14/75.

Ball comp winners: John Simpson and Geoff Portbury.

Putting: Rod Dowling (26 putts).

NTPs: 5th Jamie Wilkinson, 15th second shot Aaron Purcell, 16th Greg Collier.

Tomorrow is Medley Stableford, 8.30am for 9am start.

This Sunday is Medley Stroke.

The ladies will have a working bee on Saturday around the clubhouse with a 9am start. Please bring shovels, rakes, clippers and a wheelbarrow if you have one.

On Tuesday, April 25 there will be a Medley Stableford, 10am for 10.30am start.

A reminder that Jerilderie Ladies Tournament is Friday, May 5, Mixed 4BBB (Wilson Cup) is Saturday, May 6 and Men’s Open is Sunday May 7.

Finley

This week’s ladies golf was the Southern Riverina Scents Stroke Event.

Janet Delmenico won the day with 72 net after countback.

Ball competition winners were: Maree Doyle 72, Mary Polkinghorne 75 and Kim McCaw who had 78 net.

Putting competition was won by Annie Wood with 25 putts.

The day was round two of the Ladies Championships, and with rain falling there were some close finishes.

In A-grade Sharon Pyle is still leading Kellie White by one, followed by Joanne Dean and Kaye Sutton.

In B-grade Enid Bain has gone two ahead of Janet Delmenico, followed by Sue Simpson.

In C-grade Annie Wood has a commanding lead over Kath Klemke.

Good luck to all players in today’s final round.

Trevor McCaw, with 37 points, came home the winner when the men played stableford on Wednesday.

NTPs: 18th Paul Pinnuck.

Ball competition winners were: John Taylor and Mark Newton on 33 and Rob Daniel on 32 stableford points.

Stableford was played on the back nine at the Nine Hole Competition on Thursday.

John Taylor was the winner with 19 points, with Rob Daniel on 17 as the winner in the ball competition.

Friday was Fish Day at Finley.

Leo McNamara, with 35 after countback, came out the winner with John Taylor also on 35 a winner in the ball competition.

NTPs: 18th Billy Smith.

On Saturday, stroke was played for the Nutrien Ag Solutions Trophies and it was also the first day of the Men’s 2023 Championships.

For the daily competition in A-grade, it was Matt Daniel with 71 net.

B-grade was Leo McNamara with 69 net, C-grade went to Peter Wood on 67 net and in D-grade it was Rand Wilson with 70 net.

The ladies also played stroke, and it was Kim McCaw with 73 net who claimed the day.

NTPs: 18th Brendan Heath.

Ladies putting went to Sue Simpson.

Ball competition winners were: Billy Smith 70, John Taylor 71, along with Darren John, Andrew Tregeagle, Rick Harris, and Tony Smith who all had 73 net.

After day one of the championships, Matt Daniel with 77 gross led the open grade.

John Taylor was in front with 82 gross in B-grade, Peter Wood led C-grade with 89 gross and Rand Wilson was in front in D-grade with 100 gross.

After overnight rain, it was entirely different for day two of the Men’s Championships, for which Ashley Haynes Butchery provided the trophies.

For the daily competition in A-grade, the winner was Trevor McCaw with 71 net.

B-grade winner after countback was Simon Fuller with 73 net, C-grade went to Brendan Heath on 75 net and in D -grade it was Jacob Smith with 77 net.

NTPs: 18th Brett Shaw.

Ball competition winners were: Matt Daniel 72, Andrew Tregeagle 73 Sel Corcoran 74, along with Adam Purtill, Kevin McCumstie, and Billy Smith, who all had 77 net.

At the end of the second day of the championships, Matt Daniel held his lead with 154 gross in open.

With 179 gross each, Kevin McCumstie and Jason Pyle shared the lead in B-grade, and with 187 gross Billy Smith took over the lead in C-grade.

Rand Wilson, with 211, held onto his lead in D-grade.

Tocumwal

On Tuesday, April 11, the ladies played for the Monthly Medal and it was the semi-final of the Beryl Mawdsley Memorial singles knockout.

Division 1: Lynda Jolly net 73, R/U Sharon Pyle net 76, 3rd Shellei Clark net 78.

Gross winner: Lynda Jolly 90.

Division 2: Mary Murdoch net 69, R/U Karen MacDermid net 71, 3rd Bev Richard net 73.

Gross winner: Bev Richard 98.

Gold Division: Beverley Campbell 43 points.

Monthly Medal winner: Mary Murdoch net 69.

Putting: Sue Simpson 25 putts.

Semi-final winners of the Beryl Mawdsley Memorial Knockout: Libby Quick defeated Bobette Wilkinson 2/1; Nat Beard defeated Kerry Conrad 4/3.

NTPs: 17th Mary Murdoch, 14th Patricia Small, 18th Lynda Jolly.

On Wednesday, April 12, the men played stableford on the composite course - captain’s 1-9 and president’s 1-9.

Division 1: Samuel Morrissey 40 points, R/U Matthew McLeod 39 points, 3rd Scott Eddy 38 points.

Division 2: Brian Dare 39 points, R/U Ron Huy 38 points, 3rd Phillip Cheesewright 38 points.

Division 3: Jim Power 40 points, R/U Ed Brown 34 points, 3rd Peter Cunningham 33 points.

NTPs: 2nd captain’s Terry Stokes, 8th captain’s Darren John, 2nd president’s Liam Purtill, 8th president’s Matthew McLeod.

Saturday, April 15, the competition of the day was stableford on the captain’s course.

Sunday, April 16, the competition for the men was a stableford 4BBB with the best eight pairs qualifying for the Tony Baldwin Memorial on the president’s course.

Winners: John and Harry Thompson 47 points, R/U Grant Stewart and Scott Eddy 45 points.

Ladies: Pamela Richardson 31 points.

Gold Division: Denis Garner 37 points.

NTPs: 2nd Susan Hawe and John Thompson, 8th Stuart Lemmens, 14th Randall Jakeman, 18th Harry Thompson.

Berrigan

Friday's winner was Joe Nicholls (45-9.5-35.5), runner-up was Nick Manley (40-4-36).

Joe also won the putting with 12 putts, and ball winners were Steve Senini, John Walker and Jeff Stein.

Saturday's winner was Chris Kelly (38-7-31), runner-up was Maria McDonnell (55-17.5-37.5).

Jeff Stein won the putting with 12 putts, and the ball winner was Steve Senini (53-13.5-39.5).

Sunday's 18 hole stroke event was won by Lachlan Whelan with (86-18-68), runner-up was Chris Cameron (77-5-72).

Putting was won by Jeff Stein with 26 putts and the ball winner was Matt Whelan (76-3-73).

This Sunday is stableford, with tee off at 12.30pm.

The next Golf Trade Day is on Sunday, April 30, and is a three person ambrose.

You will need to organise your own team, with entry $25 per person.

The day will have stroke and handicap winners, as well as ladies and men's longest drive.
