We ask him about how it’s going on the greens, if he’s happy with the start everyone has made.
“Everyone except Echuca,” Liddell said in response.
It’s arguably a little harsh — even if no Echuca team has a winning record through two matches.
Four of the sides are 1-1, with a couple in the top four.
But Echuca is used to winning, most notably the reigning division one champion.
Liddell’s response was probably sparked by the side going down to Moama on Saturday, the president adding the team was given a “touch up’’.
And the assessment is fair when looking at the scores — Moama cruising to a 68-41 win on shots and taking out all three rinks.
The result also makes the Steamers the early pacesetters as the only undefeated team.
“We had a couple away,” Liddell said.
“I'm not making excuses, but we probably would have put three other players on the greens with our regular availability.
“But it is what it is; the wheel goes around.”
The president will definitely be a bit more upbeat should Echuca knock off Stanhope in round three — a rematch of last season’s decider.
What he’s certainly happy with is the club’s start to midweek pennant action.
Echuca had a perfect record across the board in round one — four teams, four convincing wins.
Away from the competitive action is social bowls.
This month, one night each week will be dedicated to attracting newcomers.
“On Monday nights we're doing come and try sessions for anybody who wants to have a go and has never played bowls,” Liddell said.
“It’s from 5pm to 6pm and everybody's welcome.”
Though the action on the greens is important, away from it, the club is doing everything to get a roll on with fundraising — the efforts all part of replacing a worn out clubhouse.
A car raffle and ball were key initiatives this year.
Most recently, the club received $2000 for the redevelopment from Echuca-Moama Rotary Club.
The focus is very much on appealing to the town’s desire to help out one of its historic sporting establishments.
“Everybody who was a participant and donor in the car raffle and ball, thank you very much,” Liddell said.
