Echuca continues to stake its claim as one of the main Goulburn Valley League netball premiership contenders, easing to a 29-goal win over Shepparton Swans on Saturday.

The Murray Bombers made a big statement last time out by knocking off undefeated Euroa, but had to keep stacking the wins with the Pies and Mooroopna right alongside them at the top of the league ladder.

The Swans arrived having been inconsistent across their opening nine matches, but made a competitive start at Echuca South Recreation Reserve, Echuca only leading 5-4 after seven minutes.

But Bronwyn Slater’s side levelled up to close the opening period, scoring nine of the final 13 goals to take a 14-8 lead into the first interval.

Echuca added another 13 goals in the second — including a run of five straight midway through the quarter — to further boost its advantage at half-time, leading 27-17.

The Murray Bombers blew their margin out to start the second half, beginning the third quarter by scoring nine of the first 11 goals, but the Swans were more competitive towards the end of the period, still trailing by 19 heading into the fourth.

The Swans continued to battle as the final period started, trading baskets with Echuca in the first five minutes before the host put its foot down, netting 11 straight goals and going on to seal a dominant 62-33 win.

Echuca only improved as the game wore on, with 22 goals each for Sheridan Townrow and Belinda Lees and 18 for Rose Byrne, making up the Murray Bombers’ total.

A fifth consecutive win for Slater’s team kept it second on the league ladder, still behind Euroa on percentage, but ahead of third-placed Mooroopna via the same metric.
