Round Three of the Tallangatta and District Football and Netball League saw Rutherglen head up to Tallangatta on another picturesque autumn day.
A bumper crowd was treated to a tight contest with both sides playing some great football. It was an arm wrestle all day with the biggest margin being two goals at half time, but unfortunately the Rutherglen Cats fell short by a point.
The young Cats side competed extremely well against the bigger bodied Hoppers with a team focus on defence this week. The defenders led the way with great performances from Charlie Beattie who marked everything that came his way as well as ruckman turned centre half back Tyler Ferraro and Mitch Cofield holding up well against two premier forwards of the competition.
The midfield battle was fierce with experienced players Reed Bonat and Jarryd Hatton as well as young guns James Tanner, Tommy Allison and Thomas Killpatrick thrusting the Cats forward at every opportunity.
Forward pressure was a highlight with Michael Cooper competing for everything and turning the ball over to kick three goals for the day.
Although it’s upsetting to go down by one point the coaches and supporters couldn’t be prouder of the efforts and improvements shown.
The Cats now look forward to hosting Kiewa Football and Netball club for a massive Anzac Day clash where the senior side gets to test themselves against last year’s grand finalist.

Reserves
Cats 14-13-97 def Tallangatta 4-13-37
Our Cats Reserves drove to Tallangatta on Saturday knowing it hadn’t been a very happy hunting ground in the past. It was obvious from the first bounce that this group were not going to let the past results continue.
It was an entertaining game to watch with a very even spread of contributors across the ground.
Bennet Thomas was unpassable in defence at the same time our forwards were all looking dangerous. If not for a number of kicks hitting the post the margin would have been even greater.
Jacob Meyer is going to continue to be a handful for opposition teams as he gets back to some very good form. The young guys through the middle were constantly marking and pushing the ball forward with plenty of run. Well Done boys on a great performance.
Award Winners: Poachers Paradise Hotel – Sam Stefani, Schnitz Albury – Bailey Scholes, Baker Seeds – Jayden Baldwin, Rutherglen Pizza – Eli Knight, Club Corowa – Ben Ratcliffe.

Cats 15-13-103 def Tallangatta 2 – 7 – 19
Warm and sunny conditions met our players as we travelled to Tallangatta. Tallangatta was first out of the blocks with a goal early in the first quarter leaving Rutherglen’s forward line flat footed and lacking drive.
A rev up at quarter time saw the boys come out and redeem themselves, taking control of the game. Young Harry Chandler led the way with 6 goals for the game followed by Charlie Poole with 4 goals. The backline held strong to quash any forward attacks by Tallangatta.
The passion and determination of the team was only marred by a few undisciplined acts towards the end. Overall another great game by this talented and close-knit group of boys.
Best players were Harry Chandler, Aidan Berriman, Sonny Enever-Cooper, Lucas Moore, Mitch Francis, and Jayden Arnold.
Special mention to Fred Jackson, Ely Keyes, Lincoln (Snowy) Barnes, Flynn Verhulst and Baylee Morton.
Once again, all team members played their part in the win.
We’re looking forward to a grand final rematch with our nemesis Kiewa – Sandy Creek at home this Saturday.

Cats 10-17-77 def Tallangatta 0-2-2
The Rutherglen Cats Under 14s headed to Tallangatta undefeated for their third match of the season. It was perfect conditions at Rowen Park and our young players were up for the challenge.
It was a dominant performance by the Cats who led at every change and managed to hold Tallangatta to only two points for the match.
Our co-captains Aaron Lewis-Carmichael and Dustin Fisher continued to lead from the front with Dustin scoring three goals and both providing drive through the centre of the ground. Jax Ramsey worked hard in the ruck all game providing our mid field with first opportunity out of the centre.
Brayden McInnes and goal sneak Liam Colvin both chipped in for a couple. Seth Goodman was an unlikely goal kicker chiming in for one goal.
The back line were solid all day with Elijah McFarlane and Arthur Morris providing good run off half back. It was a great overall team performance, and it is good to see the boys working so well together under the coaching of Ben and Tommy.
We look forward to next week’s match at home against Kiewa Sandy Creek.

A Grade
Cats 17 def by Tallangatta 73
Award Winners: Best On Court – Tiarnie Lumby, The Other Place – Jess Oats.
As a team, the girls are really starting to come together very well with this beginning to show on court. Our passive plays and connection down the court is great.
Unfortunately the game saw us chasing Tallangatta the whole time. Despite the score line the girls kept going and all were still able to have fun and walk off the court with a smile.
Tallangatta were a strong side, making quick passes down the court and their shooters were often too quick for our defence. When our defence marked tightly it made it difficult for the opposition mid-court to feed the ball into their shooters.
Our mid court players worked tirelessly throughout the match. At times it was far too tempting to send the ball long and overhead, these were successful and resulted in quick goals by our shooters Bridget and Tahni.
Ally (WA) created space for nearly every centre pass, provided some super feeds into the girls, when the girls marked tightly when the ball was in possession of the opposition it resulted in some great intercept turnovers.
Jess our trusted centre worked the court like a machine, connecting every part seamlessly, and playing safe when the ball was in her hands.
She always makes herself available around the attacking and defensive circles.
When our defence, Bylee (GK) and Kath (GD), and WD Floss and Kayla marked tightly it made it very difficult for the opposition's attackers to get a quick pass, making them take an extra pass into their shooters.

A great game by the 17’s today. Really working hard towards the ball and rewarding each other with each turnover. It’s great to see the girls gel with each other. Fantastic mid court and shooting. Wel done Cats.

Award Winners: Club – Faith O’Donoughue, Voucher – Lucy Jacka, $10 – Harlow Wilson.
Our Under 15’s girls have been focusing on three key skills and it was great to see all the girls implementing these skills into their game. Faith and Lucy were strong in the mid court and ensuring our shooters had many opportunities. Harlow demonstrating a hunger for the ball and has started to hold out her defenders.
Defensive pressure was great from the entire defensive end.

The score does not always reflect the effort and persistence of our young netballers. The team got off to a promising start moving the ball well down the court and getting some early goals. The Hoppers are a quality team and were able to find space on the court despite strong efforts to defend from all players.
Players continue to make steps forward each week and will continue to develop as the season progresses. Stay positive, Go Cats.
