He was one of nine local musicians to receive a 2021 South West Music scholarship.
Mason, 12, has been learning guitar with SWM for three years.
He performed key pieces and answered questions for a panel of adjudicators on Saturday, October 24.
He will receive a subsidy from SWM for his music tuition and will be offered performance opportunities to enhance his music education.
Judges said Mason gave a confident performance of the two pieces he played.
‘‘He was entertaining and well prepared. His rhythm and pitch were mostly accurate,’’ the judges’ notes read.
‘‘His general knowledge was very good and he was able to share his love for making music.’’
SWM interim director Kate Butler said Mason defied the difficult audition conditions and was worthy of selection.
‘‘I was very impressed at the calibre of students who performed, and the care and commitment shown by teachers, who went above and beyond to help calm nerves, build confidence and celebrate the
successes of their students,’’ Ms Butler said.
Mason said he went into the judging process a little apprehensive and nervous, having missed his previous lesson with teacher Brett Allitt.
‘‘When I arrived at South West Music, Brett met me there and talked me through what would happen and I had a bit of a practice,’’ Mason said.
‘‘I was nervous when the judges were asking me questions, but I was okay when I started playing.
‘‘I had to play Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N Roses and Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne.
‘‘I would really like to thank Brett for nominating me for the scholarship and to South West Music for offering them.’’
