“In those days people will no longer say, 'The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'. Instead, everyone will die for their own sin; whoever eats sour grapes — their own teeth will be set on edge.” (Jeremiah 31:29-30 NIV).
Under the old covenant before Christ came into the world, the consequences for sin were visited upon the future generations to the third and fourth generation.
Jeremiah the Prophet in this scripture was looking to the future to the new covenant established by Jesus.
Today, we are only held accountable for our own sins.
When we put our trust in Jesus we receive forgiveness for all of our sins and transgressions, and we become a new creation in Christ.
If we break the law we still have to be accountable to the law, but God will not hold our sins against us on judgement day.
For a believer, the past is gone and we are encouraged to look forward.
We can’t change the past but we can change the future.
It’s not healthy to live in the past and wallow in the sins and traumas of yesterday.
When we are forgiven we are free to create a blessed and happy future.
