A 20-year-old Strathmerton man was clocked by police driving at 144km/h in a 100km/h zone at Mundoona.
Police said the green p-plater was driving on Walsh’s Bridge South Rd when pulled over by police on Thursday, September 17.
A day earlier, only a few kilometres away, a 20-year-old Picola woman was stopped by police doing 140km/h on the Murray Valley Hwy about 2km from Nathalia.
Police said the green p-plater was travelling north on the highway in a green Ford hatchback when she was spotted by a patrolling police car and pulled over.
Both drivers were fined immediately and their driver’s licences will be suspended for six months.
Nathalia police First Constable Ethan Venola condemned the driving by both drivers, with police especially concerned that one of the drivers was picked up at such speeds on Walsh’s Bridge Rd, which saw two fatal crashes last year only a few kilometres away.
A Waaia man died after his vehicle left the road and crashed in a single-vehicle crash at Kaarimba at about 11.35pm on August 19 last year, while a 25-year-old Shepparton man died when his car and a truck collided on the same road at Mundoona on November 24 last year.
First Constable Venola was concerned that motorists were driving at the speeds that these two P-platers were detected at.
“We see these speeds as excessive and dangerous,” he said.
“Drivers need to be aware that at 140km/h they are in barrelling steel coffins.
“In this area we have a lot of straight roads where people lose concentration and it’s easy to speed, but it’s also the loss of concentration that causes collisions.
“Drivers need to keep alert and pay attention.”
