Miss Smith started in the role last week, and it is the first step in her career.
While working she will be completing a Information Studies through Charles Sturt University. She is currently in her second year of the course.
Miss Smith is not new to the area though, having grown up in Jerilderie and attending Finley High School.
She said that makes her acutely aware of how lucky she is to have found her dream job so close to home.
"Positions as a library officer do not arise often in rural areas, and I was happily surprised and eager to apply when this opportunity in Berrigan came available,” she said.
"As I am studying, this position is an amazing opportunity to gain practical knowledge to further my career.
"So far it is going really well. My coworkers have been very welcoming, and I have had the opportunity to work at each of the individual branches for a day getting to know the other librarians and their work styles."
Before starting the role, Miss Smith has the opportunity to tour the library facilities and meet the other staff during an induction process.
"It was great to spend time getting to know them as individuals and gain some knowledge to incorporate into my own practice.
"The community has also been very welcoming and I look forward to getting to know everyone.
"I thoroughly enjoy meeting the ‘Scabble’ group every Tuesday and look forward to seeing them again next week."
Miss Smith said choosing to become a librarian was an easy decision, steered by her love for books.
And she said the extra duties required of a library officer, including assisting with community information, is also rewarding.
"I have had a passion for books from a young age, and have a large personal collection,” she said.
"It seemed a logical choice for me to take make a career out of my interest and love of books and share my joy for books with others.
"The importance of the library has been highlighted during this tumultous period in providing services to the community, access to entertainment and assistance.
"For example, providing members of the community with information on COVID permits and how to obtain them, and the latest information on the border region.
"The library is a place where the community can come together and stay connected."
The Berrigan Library is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 5.30pm, and Saturdays from 9.30 to midday.
