Every year, on September 17, thousands of people become Australian citizens in local communities across the nation.
Moira Shire welcomed 34 new citizens, including 28 adults and six children from 12 different countries ― Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Philippines, Italy, United Kingdom, South Africa, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand, India and New Zealand.
The new citizens have made their homes in Cobram, Yarrawonga, Invergordon, Katunga, Burramine, Picola, Boosey, Numurkah and Nathalia.
Moira Shire Council chair administrator Graeme Emonson and administrator Susan Benedyka congratulated and welcomed the new citizens at the ceremony.
“Australian citizenship is the common bond which unites us all, regardless of where we were born,” Dr Emonson said.
“I encourage our new citizens to embrace their new lives here, and add their own unique voices to our strong and vibrant Moira community.
“Australian Citizenship Day is an opportunity for all Australians to reflect on the meaning and importance of Australian citizenship, and the responsibilities and privileges we have as citizens.
“Whether we are citizens through birth or by active choice, it is a chance for all Australians to take pride in our citizenship, celebrate our democratic values and think about what unites us as Australians.”
