The name Gwen Dickson will appear on the facade of the Australian War Memorial this Friday, January 28.
On July 8, 1943 Ms Dickson enlisted in the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF).
The former ledger-keeper was just 18 when, three months later, she was transferred to the RAAF base at Tocumwal.
By then a trained telegraphist Ms Dickson served for two years before a sudden illness struck her down on January 20, 1946.
Despite receiving medication at the base hospital, Ms Dickson died that night — she was only 20 years old.
The cause of death was never determined.
At 9.58pm this Friday, Gwen Dickson’s service will be honoured by the Australian War Memorial — her name, projected onto the facade of the Hall of Memory.
The projection is a tradition at the Australian War Memorial, which lists all 102,000 service personnel who have died during conflicts throughout history.
Each name is projected once every three months.
