Freedom on wheels for residents

Residents of the Uniting Amaroo Berrigan Aged Care Facility can now move with a little more ease, after a supportive donation from the Berrigan Uniting Church.

The church last week donated a new electric wheelchair to the facility.

Church secretary Lynette Kelly said the wheelchair is viewed as a long-term investment in the wellbeing of the Berrigan community.

“Many residents at the facility struggle with their physical mobility and, as their physical strength declines, they can no longer use a manual wheelchair,” she said.

“Subsequently, their independence gets more limited or ceases altogether.

“An electric wheelchair is easy to use and gives the resident the ability to move around inside the facility without having to rely on anybody else, providing a much-needed boost to their mental health and dignity.

“Access to an electric wheelchair usually depends on individual family support. Not all residents have this support, and financial resources for Uniting Amaroo are limited.”

Mrs Kelly said with this in mind, and in continuing its close ties to the local community, the donation was a way of showing “the goodness of Christ in action”.
