You might think you know the Goulburn Valley, but how many of these have you actually ticked off? Here are five local experiences worth putting on your list.
1. Watch the sunset over the Goulburn River
Pack a picnic, grab a takeaway and find a spot along the river as the sun goes down. Whether it’s Shepparton, Mooroopna or one of the surrounding towns, there’s something pretty special about watching the day wind down beside the water.
2. Visit the Shepparton Art Museum
Even if you’re not usually an art-gallery person, SAM is worth a visit. Take your time wandering through the exhibitions, check out the architecture and finish with a coffee or bite to eat.
3. Take a day trip to Tahbilk or one of the region’s wineries
You don’t have to be a wine expert. Pick a beautiful day, round up a few friends and spend the day exploring one of the region’s wineries. Add lunch and you’ve got yourself a pretty good local getaway without going too far from home.
4. Experience a proper country event
Head along to a local show, field day, rodeo, agricultural event or country festival. Get amongst the crowds, grab some food, check out the animals and soak up the atmosphere. These events are a huge part of what makes the Goulburn Valley what it is.
5. Get out and explore the region
Choose a town you don’t normally visit and make a day of it. Grab a coffee, explore the shops, find a local pub or bakery for lunch and see what you discover. From Tatura and Murchison to Mooroopna, Nagambie, Kyabram, Numurkah, Rochester and beyond, there’s plenty to explore close to home.
