The honour was bestowed in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the teaching profession and his long-standing commitment to teachers in the Finley district.
A special dinner was held last week to honour Mr Whitty’s achievements, with guests gathering to celebrate his dedication, leadership and tireless advocacy for teachers and public education over many years.
Mr Whitty joined the Finley Teachers Federation Branch in 2006 and has played an integral role in its work ever since.
He was elected treasurer in 2007, a position he continues to hold, and has served as branch secretary and councillor since 2013.
He has also represented the federation as an annual conference delegate from 2008 to 2012, and has been the federation representative at Finley High School since 2012.
Beyond his formal roles, Mr Whitty has been instrumental in organising and supporting numerous local campaigns and initiatives.
He drove the local ‘I Give a Gonski’ and ‘Fair Funding Now’ campaigns, advocating for fairer funding and improved outcomes for public education.
In 2022, Mr Whitty led a joint day of action with local Independent Education Union (IEU) members, demonstrating his commitment to collaboration and collective advocacy.
He also organised local participation in the ‘More Than Thanks - It’s Time’ campaign during the 2023 NSW state election.
Since 2013, Mr Whitty has coordinated local All Member Broadcasts, helping keep federation members informed, connected and engaged.
His advocacy has also extended to meeting with local Members of Parliament and a Duty Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) in support of the ‘More Than Thanks - It’s Time’ campaign.
Mr Whitty’s life membership recognises not only the many positions he has held, but also the time, energy and commitment he has devoted to supporting his colleagues and strengthening the federation in the Finley district.
His dedication to public education, his fellow teachers and the local federation community has made a lasting contribution.
The special dinner was a fitting opportunity to acknowledge his achievements and celebrate a well-deserved honour.
“Congratulations to Matt on being awarded life membership of the Finley Teachers Federation,” Finley High School principal Jeff Ward said.
“He can be justifiably proud of his achievements.”
