Coming off its first win of the year, the Timbercutters simply didn’t have the legs to keep up in the second half, eventually succumbing.
Final score: Mathoura 4.5 (29) to Berrigan 15.15 (105).
Mathoura traded goals with the Saints in the first quarter as both sides went into the quarter-time break with three goals.
Berrigan struck back in the second quarter, extending its lead to 18 points at half-time before piling on six goals to one in the third quarter to put the game to bed.
The Timbercutters added two behinds in the fourth quarter as Berrigan ran out 76-point winners.
Nick Ferrari backed up his 10-goal haul last week with three of Mathoura’s four goals, while Jack Duggan and skipper Andrew Evans were once again in the best playing out of the Timbercutters backline.
Will Gorman and Ron Middleton made the most of Berrigan’s dominance down forward booting five goals each for the Saints.
“We were missing seven players from our regular side, so we only had two on the bench,” Mathoura coach Stan Gilday said.
“We had three under-17s play and they already played in the morning.
“As a team we ran out of gas after half-time and Berrigan managed to get over the top of us.”
Despite the loss, Gilday admitted he was pleased to see his young side craft a full half of football together.
“We gave them a really good contest,” he said.
“It’s pleasing to see the young guys gaining confidence and fitness and being able to put it all together.
“We’re a work in progress but the first half was pleasing because we at least lasted a half, not just half a quarter.”
Goals: Nick Ferrari 3, Nathan Neville.
Best: Jack Duggan, Andrew Evans, Benjamin Keogh, Connor Wright, Kyle Magro.
Mathoura returns to its home ground this Saturday for a round seven clash against Deniliquin Rovers.
