Southern Riverina Veterans
The Southern Riverina Veterans Golf Association’s March competition day was held at the Cobram Barooga Golf Club on Monday, March 14 with 110 golfers taking part.

Stableford was played on the west course and Stephen Piggott (Cobram) took the A grade trophy after countback on 36 points. David Wilson also from Cobram, also on 36 points, was runner up.
Colin Rangitonga (Tocumwal) won B grade with 35 points, with Kevin Hayden (Yarrawonga) runner up on 33 after a countback. Phillip Latham (Yarrawonga) claimed C grade with 41 points, from John Dobbie (Cobram) on 40 points.
No A grader could find the green for their NTP.
B Grade was claimed by Colin Rangitonga (Tocumwal), C Grade went to Neil McPherson, and all grades was picked up by Chris Kelly (Berrigan).
John Dobbie was awarded the OBE Trophy. The NSWVGA Grassroots player was awarded to Colin Rankin (Cobram).
Ball competition winners were players with 26 points or better.
Finley:
Wednesday’s Ladies Stableford, sponsored by Barooga Sporties, saw Sue Simpson win with 33 points.
Ball winners were Jenni Corcoran and Maureen McNamara on 31 points, Margot Robertson with 29 and Beth White with 28.
No lady golfer was able to find the 13th green.
In the men’s competition, Colin McNamara was the winner on a countback with 36 points.
Ball winners were Paul Beaver with 36 points, John Taylor with 34 points, Marty Piggin with 34 points and Wayne Peasley with 33 points.
Wayne Peasley also collected the NTP on the 18th, while Pro Pin was won by Margot Robertson.
Thursday’s nine hole stroke event was played on the front nine, and won by Alan Hand with 36 nett on a countback.
Ball winners were Ian Swain with 36 and Leo McNamara with 37.
Friday’s annual Ladies Open tournament, sponsored by Mark II Automotive, was attended by visitors from 11 different clubs throughout our region.
The highlight of the day was Kerrie Carlon’s hole-in-one on the 13th.
A grade scratch winner was Bernie McLean of Corowa, with 83. Runner up was Chris Mildren (Commercial Albury) on 87 and Nett went to Tracey Shalders on 72.
B grade scratch winner was Enid Bain (Molong) on 96. Runner up was Marian Ayres (Finley) on 98 and Nett went to Janet Delmenico (Finley) on 76.
C grade scratch winner was Kerrie Carlon (Finley) with 101. Runner up was Annie Wood (Finley) on 108 and Nett went to Gai Singleton (Finley) on 71.
Saturday was the Mixed 4BBB, sponsored by Greg Pyle Insurance. This event also incorporated the Wilson’s Cup, which is contested over three rounds between Finley, Berrigan and Jerilderie.
The daily winners were Finley’s Paul Pinnuck and Sue Simpson with 42 points. Runners up were James Braybon and Anne Harding.
NTPs: 13th – Sue Simpson; 18th – Luke Keating (Jerilderie).
Wilson’s Cup standings after the first round sees Finley on 122, Jerilderie on 110 and Berrigan on 103.
With two rounds to go, it will be a tight contest.
Sunday’s Men’s Open sponsored by Tocumwal Golf Resort saw a field of 60 golfers play in ideal conditions to contest the three divisions.
A grade scratch winner was Berrigan’s Matt Whelan with 75. Runner up on a countback was Dave Hercus (Jerilderie).
Nett winner was Billy Smith (Finley) with 70, and runner up was Brett Shaw (Finley) on 74.
C grade scratch winner was Geoff Portbury (Jerilderie) on 97, with Todd Collett (Coleambally) runner up with 98.
Nett winner was Shane Gilbert (Coly) on 77, with Finley’s James Braybon runner up on 79.
Junior winner was Rohan Lacey of Coleambally, with 116.
It was a successful three days with more than 150 golfers playing our course, and with many compliments on its fine presentation.
Tocumwal:
Tuesday, March 8, saw the ladies playing stroke on the Captain’s course, and the first qualifying round of the singles knockout and first round of the Silver Spoon competition.
Division 1: Jan Taylor net 73; R/U Shellei Clark net 74; 3rd Pamela Richardson net 74; Gross winner Maxine Sadler 85.
Division 2: Marie Farrell net 70; R/U Gayle Edwards net 73; 3rd Shirley Desailly net 78; Gross winner Shirley Desailly 103.
Gold Division: Beverley Campbell 36 points.
NTPs: 2nd – Marie Farrell; 8th – Carol Irvine; 14th – Cheryl Hart; 17th – Jan Taylor.
Putting competition: Carol Irvine 28 putts.
Wednesday, March 9, was Stableford for the men on the President’s course, and what a week it has been for Nev Finn.
He was Monthly Medal winner on Sunday, and then got his first hole-in-one on Wednesday.
It doesn’t get any better than that – congratulations!

With the long weekend in Victoria, there was a large field to play Stableford on Saturday. It was such a beautiful autumn day, and it was good to see the club house full and vibrant.

Berrigan:
Friday’s winner was Joe Nicholls (48-9.5-38.5), runner up was Maria McDonell (54-15.5-38.5). Kura Goldsmith won the putting with 13 putts and ball winner was Chris Kelly (45-6.5-39.5).
Sunday’s winner was Anthony Holmes (86-13-73), runner up was Toby Dalgleish (94-21-73). Chris Cameron won the putting with 24 putts and was also ball winner (80-5-75).
Next Sunday is the Handicap Championship round (stroke event). Tee off is at 12.30pm.
