Talk about top brass in Wellington at the breathtaking mountain backdrop Millbrook Resort! On the first two days, Fraser played with former Australian Test Cricket captain Ricky Ponting and also in the group was Australian tennis darling and Wimbledon champion Ash Barty. Ricky, Australia’s most prolific run scorer in Test Cricket with 13,378 runs, is a close mate of Fraser’s.
At Corowa’s championship golf course this weekend there will be many stars in the two-day event 4-person stableford competition this weekend with low handicap locals and visitors, as well as sporting celebrities Tony Shaw and Wayne Phillips.
Upwards of 200 players will take to the course which is in great condition. This year’s competition boasts a hole-in-one prize of a $20,000 local shopping voucher. How good is that! Even if you’re not in the two-day competition, you can be involved in any of the other activities.
Action starts this Friday, March 8 with good money up for grabs, for anyone keen to try. At 5.30pm the Target Shootout on the range, sponsored by Mizuno, will replace the traditional sprint. This event offers all entrants two free golf balls with their entry fee and the opportunity to win $1,000 at 8.30pm.
Everyone is welcome to the Saturday evening entertainment, again, free of charge. Collingwood’s 1990 football premiership captain Tony Shaw, Australian Test cricketer Wayne Phillips and world wakeboarding champion Travis Osborne will grace the club.
Shaw has fond memories of our area, with one of his best mates and teammates Mick Gayfer who lived in Rutherglen.
Like his wicketkeeping, Phillips is brilliant behind the microphone. The star wicketkeeper and batsman talks candidly about his playing days like no other.
Osborne’s antics on the wakeboard are breathtaking. The Yarrawonga P-12 school teacher, who was born and bred in Corowa, will deliver a spectacular insight into the sport and his achievements.
Marcus Fraser wound back the clock in New Zealand, playing two magnificent rounds to be in equal second on 10 under par.
Unfortunately the 45-year-old slipped after that but is ready for his home club Corowa.
Event organiser Shaun Whitechurch is thrilled that “upwards of 200” will play in the highly regarded event.
“We want as many players as possible competing in these events,” he said. “You don’t have to be a player to come along and hear these top sportsmen on Saturday evening in and it’s free.”
