Held on April 26 and 27, the Australian National Championships brings together some of the best competition around the country.
Ivy, who hails from Coleambally, was set to compete in three different track events across the two days, as well as three different field events.
She went on to compete in the final of the 200m, and claimed broze in her favourite event - the Swedish relay.
A Swedish relay assigns each runner a different distance, with the total distance being 1000m. One runner completes 100m, the next 200m, then 300m and the final runner covers 600m.
Ivy’s mum, Vanessa, who travelled with her to Adelaide, was pleased with the championships, in particular the support competitors were showing each other.
“Ivy competes for the ACT, and is getting to know more and more of these other athletes through other meets.
“She actually pulled out of her triple jump event, just with nerves and stuff, but the support she received from those other athletes was wonderful to see.”
For Vanessa and Ivy, the more than 16 hour round trip from home to Adelaide to compete shows the commitment and support to the sport.
Getting to compete against the best the country has to offer gives you a great ‘yard stick’ on where other athletes are and where you need to be, but Ivy believes she could have performed better.
“Ivy was a little disappointed in her 200m event. There were many nerves as it was her first national event.
“But, she was really good following the event and on the way home.
“She knew how hard the national would be, and didn’t let it get her down.
“She is continuing to stay optimistic. She now knows what she has to do and knows the level.”
