The Berrigan Saints hit the road on Saturday to face ladder leaders and 2024 premiers Waaia, which was always going to be a tough assignment.

The Saints came into the game as heavy underdogs as Waaia stood undefeated.
Waaia were off to a hot start in the first term.
While the Saints were still extremely competitive they couldn’t convert the competitiveness into scores.
In the second quarter the Saints blindsided Waaia with a wave of high-pressure football that this time was rewarded with goal after goal, reigning in the deficit to only six points.
In the second half Berrigan didn’t let up, going toe to toe with the reigning premiers and matching them in every third of the ground.
It was only in the last 10 minutes of the game that Waaia were able to pull away.
After the game there was nothing but positives for the Saints as this was the evidence that they can compete with the best teams in big games. The heroes were definitely the backline, headlined by Jake Dalgliesh, Grant Martin and Ollie Hill, with the latter playing his best game after being a mid-season pick up. The back six were terrific at stopping goals but also co-ordinating the speed and style of play.
Lochie Conboy and Xavier Fox both continued their extremely good run of form, while Lochie Schifferle led goal scorers with three majors playing in a new role up forward.
It was a tremendous effort by the Saints that could not be faulted for lack of heart or passion.
Final score: Berrigan 9.8 (62) def by Waaia 12.15 (87)
Reserves:
A tough week for the Berrigan Reserves as they faced a strong Waaia team with a heavily undermanned side.
The Saints still gave it their all with many young players stepping up to help out.
Young thirds superstar Jack Magill deserves a round of applause as in his debut game in the reserves he was one of the Saints’ best.
Stu Pyle played a terrific game down back after being under siege much of the game, standing tall and doing everything he could.
Jack Smith and Jacko Clancy also deserve a mention for their terrific debut games.
Final score: Berrigan 0.0 (0) def by Waaia 22.20 (152).
Fourths:
The youngest Saints travelled to Waaia for a strongly contested game.
The final scoreboard did not reflect the hardworking Bombers who were great competitors.
The Saints ran away with a 71-point victory.
Jordan Swann kicked nine goals, bringing his season's tally to 57. Ollie Batten played his best game all year, showing grit and determination.
Kobe Smith and Leroy Kortum dominated in the fifths pre-game warm up and applied that spirit in the fourths match.
Final score: Berrigan 12.7 (79) def Waaia 1.2 (8).
