Despite some tough results, there were standout performances, strong team efforts, and plenty of grit shown on court.
A Grade battled hard despite most of their team being filled from all grades, C Reserve celebrated a well-earned win, and the Under 17s fought to a thrilling draw.
With several players doubling up and others stepping up from lower grades, it was a true display of club spirit and determination from the Saints.
A-grade: Berrigan 34 def by Strathmerton 62.
A tough game for the A Grade side, going down with a loss but the girls gave it their all, with five of the eight players backing up after already playing earlier in the day.
Awards: Layla Towler, Charlie Magill, Bec Ware.
B-grade: Berrigan 36 def by Strathmerton 70.
This team was ‘thrown together’, but still a capable side which showed real promise, with some strategic direction and gameplay. There were some lovely passages of play, with players still smiling at the end of the match and having enjoyed the company of their teammates. The team tipped everything across the board and can be proud of their efforts.
Awards: Bianca Mohr, Jodi Hawes.
C-grade: Berrigan 24 def by Strathmerton 44.
Another slow start let Strathmerton get the jump on the Saints, but after settling down they started to play their own game giving our shooters plenty of opportunities. A couple of changes at quarter time in defence slowed Strathy’s ball into the ring and increased the speed sped through the mid court. Some more changes at half time saw Annabel Middleton move into WA providing options through the mid court into attack. Annabel’s ball movement allowed Lareesa Good to get around her defender to feed the ball into the ring and get plenty of goal attempts. Tash Nixon moved into centre and provided drive through the mid court.
Molly Rice has beautiful form defending in C-grade.
C-reserve: Berrigan 26 def Strathmerton 21.
After a week off, Berrigan had a slow start but quickly settled into a hard-fought and competitive match. With both sides battling it out across the court, it was a relatively low-scoring game that demanded grit and determination. A fantastic all-round team effort and a well-deserved win for the Saints!
C-reserve’s Sam Henderson takes a shot in A-grade.
Under-17s: Berrigan 34 drew Strathmerton 34.
A consistent game with lots of passages of play through the midcourt keeping the score low. The Saints were suffering through some illness and injuries, but each player threw everything at it and never quit; working the circle edge and midcourt defensive pressure was top tier.
Awards: Maddie Rice, Rosie Phillips, Gracie Rice
Under-15s: Berrigan 30 def by Strathmerton 53.
Unfortunately a slow start meant Strathy got a big early lead which was tough to try and peg back. The second half was a much better effort by the Saints, with only a couple of goals separating the two sides in both the third and fourth quarters. The players need to apply pressure and maintain the intensity for the entire game. Nevertheless, there were
some great moments in both defence and attack which provided a glimpse of what the team is capable of.
Awards: Sophie Baxter, Sophia-Ruby Morgan, Larni Gorman.
Under-13s: Berrigan 8 def by Strathmerton 38.
With just seven players available the girls showed real heart and determination from the first whistle to the last. A big thank you to Under 11 player Ella Swann who stepped up without hesitation and played with courage and composure. Despite going down by 30, the girls never dropped their heads and kept giving their all, with teamwork, grit and support for each other on court.
Awards: Darcie Smith, Ella Swann, Jessie Rice.
Under-11s: Not scored.
The young Saints took on the well oiled Strathmerton team. The girls got better as the game went on, improving their centre passes and defence.
