Jason Morgan is one of the latest Kyabram footballers to call ‘‘count me in’’ for next season’s campaign under the club’s new coach Daryl Wilson.
Morgan is the GVL’s great survivor as a player and is 41 years of age.
But apart from a few unexpected soft tissue injuries he has been defying Father Time for at least a decade and is one of, if not the best, key defenders in the league.
He recently finished in the top four in Kyabram’s best-and-fairest award for the 2026 season despite missing a few games.
He has played more than 300 games with the Bombers, reaching this milestone in the recent season.
I feel his ability to still be quick for the first 10m, his ability to read the play and to still take a strong mark have been keys to his longevity.
But he is a glaring exception to the rule.
Picola league proves popular
Coleambally Football Netball Club has received unanimous support from its members to try to join Picola District Football League’s west division next season.
The proposed move was rubber-stamped by 85 members with geographical factors and timing keys to the proposed move.
If the move comes off, Coly will have two former rivals as opponents again.
Jerilderie and Rennie, along with Coly, were in the Coreen and District Football League until 2007 when it folded.
Coly joined the Farrer League in 2010 after a stint with the Hume Football League.
If it gets the all clear to join the Picola league it will mean Picola United will still be the only Victorian club in this division of the league.
Junior homecoming
Former top youngsters are coming home to bolster their former GVL clubs for the 2027 footy season.
Will Brodie is Shepparton-bound after stints at Gold Coast, Fremantle and Port Adelaide where he clocked up a total of 56 AFL games.
Brodie was selected by the Gold Coast Suns with pick nine in the 2016 AFL Draft.
Shepparton United and one of its former star junior players are reuniting for the 2027 GVL season.
Zane Barzen this season completed playing in Heidelberg’s record-breaking fifth consecutive flag in the Northern Football League.
A mobile big key forward will be part of a potent forward line for United which already boasts the leading GVL goal-kicker of the 2026 season Matt Casey.
Schultz to mentor at Moama
Former Kyabram star Kaine Herbert is not the only well-known player joining Moama Football Club.
The Murray league Magpies have lured back one of its former star juniors, Lachie Schultz.
But Schultz won’t be donning the Moama jumper.
He is taking on a mentor’s role with the club’s under-18 players, but will still be lining up with the AFL Magpies.
Schultz was Fremantle’s 57th pick in the 2018 draft.
He has played 148 AFL games and kicked 162 goals – Fremantle (90 games, 101 goals) and Collingwood (58 games, 61 goals)
Tigers fierce on court
Watch out for the Rochester netballers next season.
While several GVL clubs have been happy with their signings Rochester is bolstering its ranks with three Victorian Netball League players – Gabrielle Dwyer, Jordyn Adams and Matilda Lethlean – coming on board.
Rochester netball president Katie Rasmussen described the signing coup as ‘‘the most exciting thing for Rochester netball in the last decade’’.
Lions select junior mentors
Seymour Football Club has completed its coaching panel for next season with the appointment of under-18 coaches.
Nigel McCarthy and Dylan Cook are returning as co-coaches and will have experienced club figure Jamie Kelly as an assistant.
Golf day
One of Merrigum Golf Club’s biggest days is fast approaching.
Techys Tyres’ annual golf day will be staged on Saturday, November 14, by the Merrigum Golf Club and caters for all golfers, including women.
This year’s event will be a three-person Ambrose – three men or women or mixed.
Hit-off time be noon with a shotgun start and entries will taken on the day.
The day is renowned for the prizes up for grabs and this will be no exception this time.
