Led by Berrigan Tidy Towns and its chairman Mark Ryan, the project has officially begun, with preparation work “just started” to ready the tower for painting.
“It’s been quite an eyesore,” Mr Ryan admitted, noting the ageing structure needed significant external prep before any artwork could be applied.
The mural will be created by renowned artist Alex Sugar, who brings more than 15 years of experience and a reputation for large-scale public artworks.
Mr Sugar’s portfolio includes vibrant, detailed murals across Australia, and his involvement has sparked excitement among locals.
“It’s predominantly going to be a horse racing theme,” Mr Ryan said.
“There’s been lots of community support.”
A community survey helped shape the mural’s theme, with residents overwhelmingly supporting a horse racing motif - a nod to Berrigan’s legacy as a horse training town.
The installation will also feature a lighting effect to illuminate the tower in the early hours after dark. A timer will ensure the lights are not on all night, to limit disruption to nearby homes.
The painting process is expected to take four to five weeks, and while the funding campaign is still ongoing, Mr Ryan said the project has received strong backing from the Berrigan Shire Council.
Tidy Towns will also continue to source grant funding to help with costs.
Mr Ryan is confident the mural will become a drawcard for the region.
“I have no doubt that it will help attract visitors to town.”
