Well respected Berrigan community member John O’Dwyer is the latest to join the prestigious club.
He had two big days of celebrations at the weekend.
On Saturday, John was joined by more than 50 family members and close friends at the Federal Hotel in Berrigan.
This included John’s four children - Geraldine, Cecilia, Angela and Marcus - along with 16 grandchildren and 22 great‑grandchildren.
The milestone was followed on Sunday by a community event attended by members of the Berrigan sporting associations, the Men’s Shed, where John is a life member, and the Berrigan Graziers, of which he is a founding life member.
Born in Cobram, John grew up on the family property, ‘Rockwell’, at Savernake.
He spent almost his entire life working the farm, finally retiring just 10 years ago at the age of 90.
His early schooling took place at Wombora School off the Riverina Highway.
There was no carpool or buses in his day - he rode his horse to and from class each day.
With only 16 to 20 students, it was a small but close‑knit school community.
Sport was a constant throughout his life.
John played golf, tennis, cricket and football, and remained an enthusiastic supporter of local sport long after his playing days ended.
“Dad was born before the Great Depression, and worked during the war,” daughter Geraldine said.
“He’s seen enormous change, especially in farming machinery, and even everyday things like washing machines.”
The family also reflected on the loss of John’s wife, Catherine, in 2023.
John has always kept a keen interest in the world around him.
It’s what his family believes has helped him reach such an extraordinary milestone.
“His secret to living so long? Retiring late, and staying interested in current affairs,” Geraldine said.
“He still reads the newspaper and checks the stock reports.”
The O’Dwyer family said they were deeply grateful for the support shown by the Berrigan community during the celebrations, and for the many well‑wishes John received as he passed this incredible milestone.
As well as cards and gifts from family and friends, John’s milestone was honoured with correspondence from King Charles and Australian and state politicians.
