The Tocumwal Chocolate School has taken out gold in the Excellence in Food Tourism category at the prestigious 2025 NSW Tourism Awards.
While she was unable to attend the gala ceremony in Sydney last week, owner operator Wendy Alford said the recognition was a major boost for the small business.
“As a small business with just myself, my husband, and a local lady who helps with events, when you get this sort of recognition it elevates your reputation,” she said.
Mrs Alford said the Chocolate School offers visitors more than indulgence, it’s an educational experience.
“People don’t always realise the quality of chocolate here in Australia.
“Through the chocolate school you go through a big learning curve in an enjoyable way, and can hopefully go on to make ethical and sustainable decisions.”
She said enhancing Tocumwal as a tourism destination has always been part of her mission.
“I’ve been promoting Tocumwal since I first started.
“I’m lucky because what I do with cacao and chocolate is international, so we’re sort of getting Tocumwal out there.
“Just because we’re in a small place, doesn’t mean we can’t do big things.”
The Alfords share deep ties to Tocumwal, having married in the town nearly three decades ago and later relocating from Melbourne for a tree change.
What began as plans for a chocolate shop evolved into the vision of a school and residence, built on a block of land they felt instantly connected to.
Despite setbacks, including COVID delays, construction began in 2022, and today the Tocumwal Chocolate School welcomes students and residential guests.
With Mr Alford working on outdoor projects and Mrs Alford leading classes, the pair continue to grow their dream while proudly promoting Tocumwal on the national stage.
The NSW Tourism Awards, now in their 30th year, are the state’s longest-running tourism honours and the only pathway to the Australian Tourism Awards.
This year’s program was one of the most competitive yet, with 125 finalists across 30 categories and 78 winners recognised for excellence in visitor experiences, sustainability, and business practices.
NSW Tourism Association CEO Natalie Godward congratulated all winners and finalists, noting that the awards celebrate the passion and hard work of tourism operators across the state.
