This week is Farm Safety Week, with the 2025 theme being ‘Second Chances: Who Knows How Many You’ll Get?’.
It’s about learning from near misses to prevent future harm.
Following is some of the advice that has been shared relating to this topic.
Machinery & Vehicle Safety:
• Use seatbelts in side-by-sides and tractors — side-by-sides now surpass quads in incident rates.
• Check brakes, guards, and PTO shields before use.
• Never bypass safety switches — even for “just a quick job”.
Fatigue & Mental Load:
• Plan breaks during long days, especially during lamb marking, spraying, or harvest prep.
• Talk about stress — fatigue is a major contributor to accidents.
• Rotate tasks to avoid tunnel vision and burnout.
Child Safety:
• Actively supervise — being nearby isn’t enough.
• Set clear zones for kids and visitors around machinery and livestock.
• Teach safety early — even toddlers can learn basic rules.
Toolbox Talks & Culture:
• Start each day with a 2-minute safety check-in.
• Share near misses without shame - they’re powerful learning tools.
• Encourage open conversations about what “almost went wrong”.
Livestock Handling:
• Use proper gates and race set-ups to avoid crush injuries.
• Stay alert during feeding and yarding - especially with rams or bulls.
• Wear steel-capped boots and gloves.
