Having grown up in modest circumstances in post-war England, Michael always dreamed of a quieter life by the sea — a dream he eventually realised in the small, close-knit town of Venus Bay.
But what truly makes Michael’s story special isn’t where he lived — it’s how he lived.
Michael didn’t set out to be a hero. He simply believed in helping people.
Whether it was driving elderly neighbours to medical appointments or delivering library books to those who could no longer get out and about, Michael found joy in small acts of kindness.
And in doing so, he made a world of difference.
He and his wife Jenny, a like-minded community soul, brought their compassion and energy to everything they did.
Together, they volunteered their time and skills in countless ways.
One of their proudest achievements was helping to establish a local Community Emergency Response Team, which now provides life-saving first aid across the area.
Michael’s efforts helped raise $23,000 — funds that equipped the town with a medical vehicle and defibrillators that continue to save lives today.
And it didn’t stop there.
With a heart for inclusion and connection, Michael also founded the local Venus Bay’s Men’s Shed — a welcoming space where men could come together, share skills, tell stories, and support one another.
What began as a simple idea turned into a vital hub of friendship and purpose for many.
Now based in Benalla, Michael continues to give back to his community through the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme.
Each fortnight, he visits two lovely older residents at Estia Aged Care, where he shares stories, conversations, and companionship that bring joy to their days — and to his own.
Michael’s story reminds us that volunteering isn’t about having special qualifications.
It’s about being present. Listening. Showing up. Sharing a laugh over a cuppa.
It’s about bringing a little light into someone’s day — and often finding your own day made better because of it.
