Originally known as Long Tan Day, this annual day of remembrance for those who served during the Vietnam War was acknowledged in Finley with the lowering of the Australian flag and laying of a wreath by Finley RSL Sub-branch vice president Ian ‘Jim’ White.
Jim is a returned Vietnam Veteran himself, and there are many others in our community who served in Vietnam.
However, the only known Finley person to lose his life in the drawn-out conflict was the then 21 year-old Matthew Loughman.
Matthew was one of eight sons born to Matthew and Mary Loughman, and passed away at Long Binh, South Vietnam in the Bien Hoa Province on July 19, 1969.
He was a Private in the 1st Australian Logistics Support Group, and is buried at the Finley Lawn Cemetery.

The Finley Regional Care Auxiliary AGM was held on Monday, August 15 and saw some changes to the executive positions.
Sue Hand is now the president, Mary Beattie and Millie Johnson hold the joint secretary position with Shirley Gray as treasurer.
The meeting was followed by afternoon tea.
The retiring president Marj Maxwell and former secretary Norma McMurray vacated their positions, having played a huge part in aged care in Finley for more than 40 years.
Both were foundation members of Finley Regional Care Auxiliary, with the inaugural meeting being held on March 13, 1991.
Marj was the inaugural president and Norma was involved in fundraising for the Ulupna building project in those early years.
While stepping down from their roles, both Marj and Norma will still be on hand to encourage and advise the new executive when needed. Marj now holds the position of vice president.

Local golfer Beth White achieved every golfer’s dream last Wednesday while playing in the annual Pink Day Out at Finley Golf Club.
Beth teed off on the par 3, 141m 6th hole with her partner Linda Rendell and visitors Sandi Moore and Marianne Whelan from Berrigan, and all were delighted to see the resulting hole-in-one.
Needless to say, the rest of the round went in a blur for the group! Celebrations continued when they returned to the clubhouse.

The Finley Lions Club wood raffle winner was Vic Watson from Berrigan. Well worth a trip to Finley even if only to win a trailer load of fire wood.
