She’s 1ft tall, blind, and her salary is two Schmackos a day.
The four-year old French bulldog has been working the front reception at Salter’s for nearly five months, greeting every guest with a waddle and only asking for attention in return.
Her ‘mum’, Amanda Hodgekinson, said Melo had always been a lover and an attention hogger, especially when it came to the other staff members.
“Every morning, she’s straight out there with her teddy to go say hello to all of them,” Amanda said.
“The boys love it.”
Melo has been in the Salters office since April 14 after she was diagnosed with optical neuritis idiopathic, which is an inflammation of the optical nerve.

At first, she had only lost sight in her right eye, but before long, she lost sight in her left — making her completely blind.
Amanda said Melo had adapted remarkably well to her new circumstances.
“It’s just like having a little toddler — wherever I go, she goes. She’s very dependent on me,” Amanda said.
“She’s very spoiled.”
But, that’s not to say she doesn’t earn her two-Schmackos-per-day salary.
When distressed customers arrive after accidents, Melo’s presence works wonders.
“She’s got a lot of love to give,” Amanda said.
“There are people out there have had an accident or a major car accident, and they come in here and they’re a bit upset or worked up — and then she comes out and it immediately calms them down.
“She’s definitely the best employee.”
