The MDBA has already received more than 600 submissions, reflecting strong interest in how the Basin’s water resources should be managed over the next decade.
Hundreds more are expected as the consultation period enters its final days.
MDBA chief executive Andrew McConville said the review is a once-in-a-decade chance to influence how water is shared, rivers are protected and communities are supported across the basin.
“This review brings together the latest science, climate data and lived experience from across the basin to assess what is working, what needs to change and how the plan must evolve,” Mr McConville said.
“Our discussion paper sets out some options. They are starting points for discussion, not predetermined decisions.
“Competing viewpoints are not a weakness of the basin reform process; they are its strength. Hearing those perspectives is integral to refining the plan.
“The Basin Plan was based on the best evidence available at the time.
“A decade on, we have more data, more experience and a changing climate, so it’s the right time to reassess how we manage our waterways and environment.”
Since consultation opened in February, the MDBA has engaged with more than 2,700 participants through more than 200 interactions across basin communities.
Alongside visits to 91 towns, the MDBA has also held webinars, roundtables, and a basin wide summit, while the dedicated hotline continues to support those preparing submissions.
“We’ll keep engaging right up until submissions close.
“Every perspective matters, and we want to ensure people across the basin have the opportunity to contribute.”
Submissions will inform recommendations to basin governments on how the Basin Plan can be improved to respond to emerging challenges, including climate variability and changing water needs.
People can find information on how to make a submission at https://getinvolved.mdba.gov.au/2026basinplanreview.
Community members who would like assistance can also call the MDBA consultation hotline on 1800 230 067.
Submissions for the 2026 Basin Plan Review close at 5pm on May 1.
