About 30 volunteers help in various ways, assisting staff, providing entertainment, helping with exercises, supporting outings, or simply spending time with the residents.
Among them are Anita and Bob Buchanan, who have been volunteering with Navorina for a combined 40 years.
Anita offered her services first, 25 years ago, with Bob joining after retirement and now serving 15 years.
Anita’s introduction was through family friend and Navorina lifestyle coordinator Bernadette Werner.
“I’m friends with Anita and Bob’s daughter Judy, and when I needed help with one of our Barooga concert trips I asked Anita if she would come along,” Bernadette said.
“She then started coming in whenever we needed help, and then she dragged Bob along.”
The Buchanans said the part they love most about volunteering is the joy it brings to the residents.
“You bond with them, and the residents really appreciate being able to go out,” Bob said.
“You do form special friendships, and it’s just good to see them happy.”
Bernadette thanked all the volunteers for bringing “kindness, laughter and companionship to our residents every single day”.
“Whether it’s helping with activities, having a chat or simply holding a hand, you make a difference.
“We are incredibly grateful for the joy and comfort you bring to not only residents, but their families and our staff too.
“Many people do get lonely and bored, and that connection helps with overall health and mental health.
“Volunteering in aged care is rewarding, meaningful and full of connection. Even an hour can brighten someone’s day.”
You do not need to have special skills to be a volunteer - just a caring heart and a little bit of time to share.
