In his commendation, he was acknowledged as the longest-serving Group Captain and Captain within the Jerilderie district, which is part of the Mid Murray region.
He has also been a significant contributor to the local area command senior leadership team, and played an important role in the design of the Jerilderie/Argoon CAT6 prototype.
Group Capt Browning has worked tirelessly with other captains to successfully navigate the amalgamation of Murrumbidgee and Jerilderie, including resource management across districts, facilitating open discussions and building relationships.
Most recently, he has supported the district in managing fire risks associated with renewable energy projects.
The other major part of the award acknowledged his role and experience as a district and zone trainer.
He has instructed on numerous courses and has played a key role in every zone exercise conducted over many years.
He has also served on and chaired many committees and advisory groups that have led to better outcomes for local landholders and the broader fire service.
Described as hardworking and humble, Group Capt Browning has dedicated decades to RFS leadership and growth with exemplary leadership, excellent fireground management and tremendous local area knowledge making him a worthy recipient of the commissioner’s commendation.
Group Capt Browning was one of more than 30 volunteers, staff and teams presented awards by RFS Commissioner Trent Curtin to those who have gone above and beyond in their service to communities across the state.
Held on May 4 each year, the award ceremony marks the Feast Day of the Patron Saint of Firefighters, St Florian, and International Firefighters’ Day.
Commissioner Curtin said this year’s awards speak to the unwavering commitment of RFS members, whose achievements extend well beyond the frontline.
“Many of the recipients have dedicated decades of service to the RFS, contributing not only on the frontline but through leadership and initiative,” Commissioner Curtin said.
“Recipients such as Mid Murray Group Captain Andrew Browning and Deputy Captain Wayne Dalton of the Queanbeyan City Brigade have built stronger, more capable teams through their commitment to training and mentoring.
“Each of our recipients has gone above and beyond in their own way, often quietly and without expectation of recognition.”
