He highlighted the need for a holistic approach to the treatment of dementia which means providing support that looks at the whole person which includes their physical, emotional, and intellectual capabilities.
Their environment and family/social situation need also to be considered.
Dr Alam detailed the different types of medication used and the minimal role it plays in managing the person living with dementia.
The Q&A session gave participants a forum to share their challenges in caring for a person with dementia, and about the challenges of living with the diagnosis of dementia.
The many challenges faced in accessing support services from early diagnosis to aged care accommodation were particularly identified.
The Berrigan Shire Dementia Alliance committee has been inspired by the participants sharing their experiences and challenges.
