Southern Hemp owner David Brian said he would bring his 12 years of experience to the table with his demos and talks this year.
“At the expo, we will be showcasing some of the houses that were built and will also be doing some demonstrations to show the procedure that is involved in making hemp houses,” David said.
He said that his love of his job came from informing people and helping homeowners create their dream house.
“I love educating people who come up to the stall, especially those who haven’t heard about hemp being used in the building,” he said.
“The stand does also show a lot of other uses of hemp as well.
“A big component is helping people who want to grow hemp — talking to them about growing hemp as a crop.”
He will be showing, and telling as well, with his farmer talks at the learning hub.
“I give an overview of what hemp is and then how it's used in building, and the benefits in building, so things like the insulation value,” David said.
“It’s breathable, and it’s a natural, sustainable product.”
He will also talk through the pros and cons of hemp building.
“The big benefit of hemp is that if you want to look like a rendered brick, you can, or you can make it more organic and a little bit rounded on the corners,” he said.
“You’ve got a lot of flexibility in design.
“All the hemp I use in my buildings is Australian grown.”
He said the hemp business was a growing industry, and he learnt more and more each year, bringing the latest information to each expo.
“We are always learning new little bits and where we need to tweak the process slightly,” he said.
“You’re just understanding more about how it reacts to different conditions as well.”
Southern Hemp’s building demos will feature at the Seymour expo.
