In this passage the woman who had been caught in adultery was brought before the crowd by the Pharisees and religious leaders of the day.
Under Jewish Old Testament law a person caught in adultery would have been stoned to death.
The religious leaders were trying to trick Jesus, so they asked Jesus what he would do.
His answer shocked them, “let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”
One by one her accusers left.
Jesus showed the woman great compassion by not condemning her.
Does this mean that Jesus condoned her sin?
No not at all. His next words were, “go and sin no more.
Jesus offered her both compassion and truth.
The truth was given to compel her to take a new path in life.
Jesus commanded her to leave her sinful life behind.
When we are confronted by truth, this can lead to conviction of the heart and a change in behaviour and direction.
This is a choice we all have to make.
Jesus never condemns us, but He always offers us forgiveness and a new way forward.
God’s love for us is transformational.
