The community were saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Ellis last Thursday in Canberra.
Jim grew up in Berrigan and at the age of 21, in 1970, travelled to Western Australia and won the Australian Clay Target Shooting Competition.
He worked on Barrow Island off the WA coast for a number of years before returning to Canberra to live.
In 1973, he competed in Australia’s first official amateur shotgun team for international shooting in the World Moving Target Championships at Melbourne.
He travelled the world competing in many clay target championships including World Championships in Berne 1974, Seoul 1978, Tucuman 1981, Edmonton 1983 and Valencia 1987.
In 1979, Jim competed at the Spartakiad Games in Moscow.
At the 1978 Commonwealth Games, held in Edmonton, Jim was placed fourth.
At the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, he won Gold.
He also competed in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
In both 1988 and 1993, Jim competed in the Oceania Championships in NZ.
Jim's name was added to the NSW Clay Target Association Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2006, he was inducted into the Australian CTA Hall of Fame.
Our thoughts are with his wife Anne, daughters Deonne and Elisha, and their families.
Jim's sisters Bev Arnold and Lorraine Kocks, and his brother Kevin, have all predeceased him.
We think of his surviving brother Graham and his family, who are well known to most Berrigan people.
Details of an event to celebrate Jim’s life are not yet available.
