The new standards were put in place by the Victorian Government to protect children, with statistics revealing unsecured blind or curtain cords claim the lives of up to two Australian children every year.
It is now mandatory to secure internal window coverings with a cord guide or cleat fixed to a wall or structure.
The changes, which took effect on December 1, supersede exemptions in place for blinds installed before 2015.
All Victorian rental properties are now required to meet these safety standards for curtains or blinds, regardless of installation date.
“The safety of children is non-negotiable and that’s why we’ve implemented these new safety standards,” Consumer Affairs Minister Nick Staikos said.
“This will save lives and is an important reminder to rental providers to ensure looped cords in every room meet mandatory standards.”
State Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland is encouraging residents to take advantage of free blind safety kits available through Consumer Affairs Victoria.
The kits include 10 plastic safety devices, screws and easy-to-follow instructions to help secure blind and curtain cords.
“Unsecured blind and curtain cords are a serious safety risk and can have devastating consequences for young children,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Tragically, these hazards contribute to the deaths of up to two Australian children each year. Securing cords is a simple step that can make a life-saving difference.
“Home safety is something we should all take seriously. I encourage families across our region with blinds or curtains to take advantage of this free kit and help keep children safe in their homes.”
A free kit can be requested online at forms.consumer.vic.gov.au/cb
Ms Cleeland also encourages those who may not have internet access to visit her electorate office at 25 Bridge St, Benalla, where staff can help complete the request.
