A very successful annual conference for Country Zone 29 of Australian Red Cross was held at Finley Golf Club recently.
President of Langunyah/Finley branch, Marnie Steer, welcomed approximately 40 delegates to the meeting before handing over to Zone 29 representative and NSW Red Cross divisional advisory board member Valmae Ryan.
Valmae’s deputy, Gillian Gorey, was also in attendance.
After the welcome to country, the National Anthem and the Red Cross pledge, Ms Ryan advised those present that secretary of the local group and outstanding member, Mrs Rosemary McCaw, had passed away that morning.
She asked for a minute’s silence out of respect.
The first guest speaker for the day was John Hand, historian for the Finley RSL Sub-branch.
He gave a talk on the memorabilia and history that has been collected at the Finley Returned Soldiers Club, and the associated service of the Red Cross with our soldiers.
John brought some of the memorabilia to the conference, and invited the visitors to avail themselves of the display. It proved very interesting.
Other guest speakers were Red Cross regional officer emergency services NSW/ACT Kate Johanson and Red Cross national member and volunteer manager Christine Crosby.
Christine travelled from Melbourne to advise members of the National Red Cross transformation.
It involves returning to core programs which the organisation has always done extremely well.
The organisers were delighted with the result of the conference, and would like to encourage new members to join in the Langunyah/Finley, Berrigan and/or Jerilderie branches of Red Cross.
New members are most welcome.

On Monday, May 22, eight Finley High School students travelled to Hay - under the supervision of Brett Murphy - to play in the Riverina squash finals.
Four boys and four girls competed against Hay Memorial High School.
The winners were to go on to play Leeton High School on the same day.
The boys' team of Reece Simmons, Ben Rourke, Will Doolan and Isaac Lunn (and reserve player James White) lost three matches to one.
Hay was simply too strong and went on to beat Leeton as well.
The girls' team of Jasmine Burke, Sienna Burke, Bella Rourke and Piper Pyle (and reserve Milena Sneddon) won their first final against Hay, 3-1.
In the final with Leeton, the girls were tied at two matches each and so it came down to games.
Finley High School took the title, seven games to six.
Finley High School’s girls' team now moves to the state finals to play against a Sydney team.
The date and venue is to be determined later this year.
Congratulations to all involved. Your great respect and team support representing Finley High School was exemplary.
